In the 19th century, there were two very significant developments in the world of football and in 1848, the first set of official rules were drawn up. Prior to this point, many clubs and schools were playing to a varied set of rules and this often led to great confusion.
Following on from this, in 1863 the Football Association was founded in England and the early roster included many clubs that are still in existence today including Aston Villa, Wolves and Notts County. From this point, the game of football had a solid platform from which to build and in the years that followed, leagues and cups were established all over the World. The FA Cup was founded in 1872 and has since grown to become the most famous cup competition anywhere in the world. After an interruption for World War One, football returned even stronger and the FA Cup was moved to Wembley stadium in 1923. Huge crowds were now turning out to watch games and the mass of spectators at that first Wembley final just underlined the growth in the game`s popularity.
As a global game, football had really progressed by this point and the first World Cup tournament arrived in Uruguay in 1930. When this tournament took place, many of the major footballing nations, including England boycotted the event and it wasn`t until 1950 before these countries joined in. Nowadays, the Word Cup is the biggest event in football and like the FA Cup, its growth just emphasises how huge football has become in comparison to those early beginnings. Football betting has evolved greatly over the years as well and it is now the most popular sport from a betting perspective. In the early days of football betting, you had to source a high street bookmaker and that may have been a difficult challenge in itself. The range of bets was limited and if you wanted to bet on a match taking place outside of the UK, this was virtually impossible.
Football betting then enjoyed steady growth through from the 1970`s onwards and the presence of bookmakers at grounds has helped that development but the real explosion in football betting came with the arrival of the internet. These days it is possible to bet on virtually any aspect of a football match from the result itself right down to the number of yellow cards in a game. You can also bet on virtually any football match anywhere in the world and you can stake your money on leagues across the globe with just the click of a mouse.
The growth in betting has developed alongside football itself over the last twenty years and the two factors mean that you can enhance your enjoyment of any game with a bet. If you`re attending football stadiums or watching at home, just place your money and then sit back and enjoy the match.
